Koi Pond And Stormy Weather

It is not possible for us to stop the natural disasters but we can most definitely be prepared for the worse. If you have a Koi pond at home, you should take measures to safeguard your pond during the bad weather.

Smaller storms

It is far easier to manage your Koi plants during smaller storms than the larger storms. It is advised that you do not feed anything to your fish at the time of the storm. Your fish will not starve to death because there are many natural sources of food in the Koi pond and your Koi can feed on them. Moreover, you will not have to face issues relating to ammonia if the storm destroys the pond's filtration system.

If the storm has been forecasted then it is advised that you change the pond's water before the storm arrives. By doing this, you can ensure that your fish will have fresh water even if you do not have the time to change the water after the storm. While you are filling the pond with water, make sure that you leave sufficient space for the rain water that the storm will bring with it. This way you can prevent water from overflowing during the storm. You should also examine the drainage system to see whether anything is blocking it. Since the pond is at ground level and plenty of rainfall is expected, you should provide more protection to the pond by sand bagging the area of the Koi pond.

It is also a good idea to cover your pond with a net so that the flying debris will not get into the pond water. In addition to this net, you can also make use of the net that you use to prevent the leaves from falling. This way you can ensure that the pond is well-protected.

Examine the area around the pond and get rid of all the things that can get into the pond at the time of the storm.

Larger storms

Needless to say, your Koi pond as well as your fish will be prone to more risk and danger during larger storms. Since most of the preventive measures will not work at the time of larger storms, it is advised that you take the Koi out of the pond and keep it inside your house till the storm subsides.

Moving the fish from one location to another is a delicate matter and you will have to have all the necessary equipments ready for the movement. Make use of the special bags for transferring fishes. You will also require good rubber bags to close out the bags where the fishes are kept.

You should make use of a paint bucket to get hold of the fish. Of course, you should make sure that the size of the bucket is big enough to hold your fish.
